Course over multiple sessions

For example, weekly 1.5 hour sessions over 5 weeks. The longer the course, the more the skills can be developed and the wider the range of techniques learnt.
At the end of the course, we hope that participants will have gained an understanding of what self defence is; the ability to appear strong and confident; a greater sense of self esteem; assertion skills and the ability to use the voice in a strong way; awareness of and affiliation with personal boundaries; a variety of skills for physical self defence, an awareness of a range of self defence techniques and strategies.

Course outline

  • Introductions, guidelines and health and safety, and group building

  • What is self defence?

  • Grounding and stance work

  • Appearing confident/body language

  • Identifying and defending personal boundaries, responding to your gut feeling

  • Voicework and assertion

  • Physical self defence: aims and principles, movement, strikes, pad work, self protection

  • Release moves

  • De-escalation

  • Dealing with hostile groups/multiple attackers

  • Self defence and the law

  • Options in different settings

  • De-brief/feedback and evaluation


  • Depending on length of course, the following can also be covered:

  • Safety in the home, responses to fear, sexual harassment, using weapons to hand, defence against weapons, defending yourself from the floor.
